NoGrinch's Messy Bun Hat

Facebook was inundated with the Messy Bun Hat yesterday so I had to try my hand at creating one!


Here's my first attempt...

NoGrinch's Messy Bun Hat Half Double Crochet Version


Supplies:
Hook: Size H
Worsted weight yarn.  I used Red Heart Unforgettable, color: Winery approx 1/2 skein (I'm not sure if it's possible to get 2 hats from skein)


Directions:
27 foundation hdc, slip stitch to join into a round (use tail to sew up the bottom of the circle) *If you don't want to do foundation hdc see note at bottom of page.

Round 1: 2 hdc in first stitch, hdc in next 2, repeat around, sl to join, ch 1 (36 hdc)
Round 2: 2 hdc in first stitch, hdc in next 3, repeat around, sl to join, ch 1 (45 hdc)
Round 3: 2 hdc in first stitch, hdc in next 4, repeat around, sl to join, ch 1 (54 hdc)
Round 4: hdc around, sl to join, ch 1 (54 hdc)
Round 5: 2 hdc in first st, hdc in next 8, repeat around, sl to join, ch 1 (60 hdc)
Round 6: 2 hdc in first st, hdc in next 9, repeat around, sl to join, ch 1 (66 hdc)
Round 7 - 17: hdc in each st around, sl to join, ch 1 (66 hdc)
(Hat should measure 5 1/2 inches from beginning to this point, adjust if necessary by adding or removing hdc rows)

Round 18: double crochet in each st around, sl to join, ch 1 (66 dc)
Round 19 - 21: front post double crochet (fpdc) in first stitch, back post double crochet (bpdc) in next stitch, repeat to end of round alternating fpdc and bpdc, sl to join, ch1 (66 dc)
(Hat should measure 6 3/4 to 7 inches from beginning to this point, adjust if necessary by adding or removing rows)

Finish off, weave in ends

Directions:


27 foundation double crochet, slip stitch to join in a round, ch 2 (use tail to sew up the bottom of this round)

Round 1: 2 dc in first stitch, dc in next 2, repeat around, sl to join, chain 2 (36 dc)

Round 2: 2 dc in first stitch, dc in next 3, repeat around, sl to join, chain 2 (45 dc)

Round 3: 2 dc in first stitch, dc in next 4, repeat around, sl to join, chain 2 (54 dc)

Round 4: the2 dc in first stitch, dc in next 8, repeat around, sl to join, chain 2 (60 dc)

Round 5: 2 dc in first stitch, dc in next 9, repeat around, sl to join, chain 2 (66 dc)

Round 6-10: dc in each stitch around, join, chain 2 (66 dc)

(Hat should measure  5 1/2” from beginning to this point; adjust as necessary by adding or removing dc rows)

Round 11: sc in each stitch around, sl to join, chain 2 (66 SC)

Round 12-14: FPDC in first stitch, BPDC in next, repeat around, sl to join, chain 2 (66)

(Hat should measure approx. 7” from beginning to this point; adjust as necessary by adding or subtracting rows)
Finish off, weave in ends.


*Note: Instead of foundation hdc or dc in the pattern, you may chain 27, join in round then 27 hdc or dc (depending on which version of the hat you're making) ... one in each chain. Then continue with the pattern.

NoGrinch's Half Double Crochet Dishcloth or Washcloth

This is more of a recipe than a pattern and is easily adjusted to any size you wish!  This "pattern" can be used to make dishcloths, washcloths, dish or facial scrubbies, placemats, table runners, afghans, blankets, or scarves - just change the width and length to create your project!

This project was created with half-double crochet but this recipe can be followed using single crochet, double crochet or your favorite stitch!

Supplies:
Size I hook
Worsted weight cotton yarn
I used Lily Sugar n Cream in Mistletoe and Bernat Handicrafter in Red Liqorice

Size:
Finished cloths measure approximately 7 1/2" to 8"across

Pattern:
Chain until you have the desired length* for your washcloth, then chain 1 more, turn

Row 1 - hdc in 2nd chain from hook and each chain across, chain 1, turn
Row 2 - hdc in each stitch across, ch 1, turn
Repeat row 2 until the cloth is as tall as it is wide, or until desired length.
Finish off

*Note:
Different yarns work up differently.
For the red dishcloth I chained 21 stitches and then worked 20 hdc across each row. The red dishcloth measures almost 8".
For the varigated dishcloth I chained 22 stitches and then worked 21 hdc across each row.  The varigated dishcloth measures 7 1/2".
It's a dishcloth so I don't worry too much over the finished size!


NoGrinch's Flower Dishcloth or Scrubby - Round Double Crochet Washcloth with Scallop Border

This pattern is for a quick and easy round double crochet cloth (washcloth, dishcloth, facecloth) with a scallop border. Pattern modifications are also included to make a flower or a makeup remover scrubby pad.


Supplies:
Hook - size I
Yarn - cotton worsted weight, I used Lily Sugar n Cream in Mistletoe

Finished Size: 7 inches

Instructions:
Rnd 1: Magic ring, 12 dc in ring, sl st to top of first dc (=12 dc)
Rnd 2: ch 2 dc in each st around, sl st to top of first dc (24 dc)
Rnd 3: ch 2, (2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in next st) repeat to end, sl st to top of first dc (=36 dc)
Rnd 4: ch 2, (2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in next 2 sts), repeat to end, sl st to top of first dc (=48 dc)
Border Rnd 5: ch 1, (sc in 1st st, skip next st, 5 dc in next st, skip next st) repeat to end (=12 shells and 12 sc)
Finish off



To Make a Flower or a Makeup Remover Scrubby Pad:
Work pattern through round 2 then add shell border:
Rnd 1: Magic ring, 12 dc in ring, sl st to top of first dc (=12 dc)
Rnd 2: ch 2 dc in each st around, sl st to top of first dc (24 dc)
Border Rnd 3: ch 1, (sc in 1st st, skip next st, 5 dc in next st, skip next st) repeat to end 
Finish off
